In Hanoi, the French influence is very much evident in the many colonial buildings that remain and in the tree lined boulevards, parks and lakes dotted around the city. You are more likely to be greeted with a ‘bonjour’ than a ‘hello’ especially from the old timers riding their bicycles or practicing Tai Chi around the Hoan Kiem Lake.
Halong Bay paints a picture perfect postcard with its emerald green waters and limestone rock formations rising out of the Gulf of Tonkin. In Hue, we learn more about the former emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty and over the Hai Van Pass, in Hoi An, life goes on for many, as it did years ago, in the local markets and surrounding villages.
We then follow the coastline all the way south along Highway 1 through Quy Nhon to Nha Trang where we have a boat trip around the surrounding islands before a night in Mui Ne and on to Saigon. |

The first week of this tour starts off quite adventurously as we trek for a couple of days through the beautiful villages in the Mai Chau valley and sleep in a simple White Thai minority house on stilts before sleeping overnight on board a junk in Halong Bay and an overnight sleeper train to Hue. The second week is more relaxing as we visit the citadel in Hue, the ancient trading town of Hoi An then follow the coast south for a boat cruise around the islands off the white sand beaches of Nha Trang.
