Enjoy a heritage walk taking in Pondicherry's distinct and surprising French colonial style, explore the artistic seaside centre of Mahabalipuram, and end in the former British centre of Madras (now Chennai). |
Days 1 - 2 Cochin Your journey begins in historic Cochin, India’s great trading port with its antique streets and fascinating blend of cultures. Take our heritage walk past traders’ mansions and the colorful waterfront, and visit the spice trading streets and 400 year old synagogue. Learn of Kerala’s rich cultures and watch as dancers transform for a performance of the renowned Kathakali dance. Days 3 - 4 Thekkady & Madurai Drive to picturesque Thekkady and discover the secrets of a remarkable spice garden. The next morning, cruise in Periyar National Park where elephants and gaur (bison) are amongst the jungle wildlife you may be lucky enough to sight. Drive on to Madurai and the vast Sri Meenakshi Temple, almost a city within a city, where we view a special evening ceremony. Days 5 - 6 Tanjore/Kumbakonam Explore this traditional town dominated by colorful gopurams of the famous Brihadishwara Temple. Stay in wonderfully atmospheric accommodation in a village style eco-resort and discover the culture and traditions of the Tamils. Days 7 - 8 Pondicherry Drive on to pretty seaside Pondicherry, a former French colony which has retained an enticing colonial atmosphere – from its French influenced architecture and streetside cafes to its patronage of the arts. Take a heritage walk and visit the world famous Shri Aurobindo ashram. Days 9 - 11 Mahabali Puram & Chennai Continuing along the coast, we visit the ancient village of Mahabalipuram – now an artisan centre and home to the historic Shore Temples. Relax by the beach or shop for excellent value handicrafts before we continue on to Chennai, the former Madras. Visit a local temple, museum and stop in at a renowned local coffee house – a South Indian tradition. Your journey ends on day 11 with an airport transfer.
