Private Escorted Tours
- Private (Not Group) Tour Chengdu • Lhasa • Yamdrock Lake • Gyantse • Shigatse • Tsedang This spectacular 12-day journey will introduce you to the highlights and complex history of Tibet. We spend some extra time in Lhasa in order to get acclimatised to the altitude, and visit remarkable monasteries, some Buddhist rock paintings and a seldom visited Tibetan nunnery. Your journey starts and ends in Chengdu, home to the world famous Giant Panda. |
Days 1 - 2 Chengdu Arrive in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, where you will meet your tour leader and group for a welcome drink and tour briefing. Our adventure begins with a visit the nearby Giant Panda Research & Breeding Base, a chance to learn more about these endangered animals. We also take the time to relax in the peaceful gardens of Dufu’s Cottage and observe local life while relaxing in a teahouse in bustling People’s Park. Tonight you may like to try the famous Sichuan Hotpot for dinner and enjoy a performance of the Sichuan Opera. Days 3 - 6 Lhasa Fly to Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet. At 3,600 metres above sea level, Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world and we take the time today to relax and adjust to the altitude. The next day we visit the Jokhang Temple, the most significant site in all of Tibet, where you may like to join the seemingly endless stream of pilgrims in walking the kora (a spiritual pilgrimage circuit) around the temple before heading to the roof for unrivalled views over the city. Over the next few days visit some of the city’s fascinating monasteries and the interesting Tibet Museum, explore the narrow back streets, and wander the hallways and chambers of the iconic Potala Palace. Day 7 Yamdrok Lake & Shigatse Head out of the city and across the great expanse of the Tibetan Plateau to Yamdrok-tso – a sparkling turquoise lake flanked by snowcapped peaks. The drive itself is a highlight, as we pass local nomad camps, herds of yak and sheep, and beautiful mountainous scenery. Stop enroute at a family home to learn more about the way of life in this remote region over a cup of yak butter tea. We continue on to Gyantse, famous for the Kumbum, a massive stupa that dominates the town. Days 8 - 10 Shigatse & Tsedang Explore the Kumbum with its chambers filled with ancient murals, Buddha images and statues, and the local Beichu Monastery. We head to Shigatse, the seat of the Panchen Lama and Tibet’s second largest city. Here we visit the Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of the very few monasteries that remained undamaged after the Cultural Revolution and take the time to explore the city’s thriving Old Quarter. A full day’s drive through the beautiful Yarlung Valley brings us to Tsedang. Join the pilgrims on a ferry ride to Samye Monastery and visit the Yumbulagang, perched above the town on a clifftop. Days 11 - 12 Chengdu We return to Lhasa for our flight back to Chengdu. There is time for some last minute shopping and a farewell meal before your ‘Tibet Experience’ ends with an airport transfer on day 12. Trip grading: ADVENTUROUS Suitable for travelers with above average levels of fitness and mobility. Prepare for some long road journeys, plenty of walking and climbing stairs, and coping with the effects of high altitude (over 4,000 metres). What's included: 11 nights hotel accommodation, flights as specified, all road transport by air-conditioned vehicles, Tibetan travel permit, all sightseeing as specified, entrance fees, Western tour leader based on a minimum of 7 travelers, local English-speaking guides throughout, arrival and departure transfers, and breakfast daily.
